Southeast Asia was the theater of America's most traumatic military experience — the Vietnam War, which killed 58,220 Americans and millions of Southeast Asians. The war expanded illegally into Cambodia (producing the Khmer Rouge genocide) and Laos (the most bombed country per capita in history). The region has largely recovered and prospered since American withdrawal — evidence that intervention was unnecessary for the outcome the U.S. wanted.
