📖 History of US Involvement in Japan
Like Germany, Japan hosts a substantial American military presence 80 years after WWII. Approximately 54,000 troops are stationed at bases across the country, particularly Okinawa, where the U.S. military presence has generated significant local opposition. The security alliance was designed for the Cold War, but it persists — at enormous cost to American taxpayers — while Japan maintains one of the world's largest defense budgets of its own.
